About
Site History
We've had a few family/personal web sites in the past (CompuServe, GeoCities, etc.) but KingsQuarry has been our domain name and hosted our family web site in various forms since 1999.
This is the fifth incarnation of our web site since 1999. The original ran over a dial-up line using OS/2 and an Apache web server with hand coded HTML. Later the dial-up line was still in place but the site was moved to FreeBSD and Apache while still being hand coded HTML. Then for a short period I dropped the hand coding in favor of using NetObjects Fusion which actually made maintaining the site easier (back in the day). Finally, I decided it was time to move away from hand coded HTML & NetObjects so the search began for a content management system, which is when I found beta releases of Plone. We've been using FreeBSD/Apache/Plone ever since.....
Domain Name
When we originally were attempting to select a domain name in 1999 we couldn't find a single word domain name we liked. So we had to get a little creative and used words which were selected from one of JoEllen's favorite authors and a place: Stephen King and Quarry Farm (aka; Mark Twain's home in Elmira, New York). The 's' was added between the two words simply so it sounded better when said aloud. You might guess, and rightfully so that JoEllen loves reading (King, Twain, etc) and we do have a lot of Mark Twain items around the house.
Jeff, JoEllen, and Joshua.
